The Kalamaku programme

From the waterfall to the fire

Six scenes in the order the buffet evening plays them, from the lei at the gate to the photo with the cast.

Three fire dancers on the Luau Kalamaku stage, each spinning a ring of flame in the dark while the audience watches

This is the shape of the buffet evening. Your date shows the starting time, the seating options change where you sit, and the VIP dinner adds a four-course meal before the show.

  1. Lei

A lei and a waterfall photo

Arriving guests receive a traditional lei greeting and have their picture taken by the waterfall, with drinks from the open bar already available.

  2. Craft fair

Local makers set out their work

Before dinner there is time to wander a craft fair of local artisans and look over what they have made.

  3. Imu

The pig comes out of the oven

In front of the guests, the kālua pork is unearthed from the imu, the earth oven it has been baking in.

  4. Buffet

    Dinner from the buffet line

Poi, salads, kālua pork, seasonal fish, teriyaki chicken, noodles and fruit, with pineapple upside-down cake, haupia and a banana crème tart for dessert.

  5. Voyage

    The main show begins

Live Hawaiian music opens the evening on stage, then the 45-minute story starts: islanders crossing between Tahiti and Kauaʻi, told through laughter, fear, seduction and fire.

  6. Fire

Hula, fire knife and a cast photo

Hula dancers, fire knife dancers and fire poi ball dancers fill the final scenes, and guests can have a photo taken with the cast when the show ends.

The story and the island

A crossing, a plantation and a garden island

Why the show is about a crossing

Polynesian voyagers crossed open ocean without instruments. Navigators memorised the order in which stars rose and set along a route, steered by the direction of ocean swells when cloud hid the sky, and watched seabirds such as terns that fly out to fish at dawn and return to land by night. The main show at Kilohana stages one such passage, between Tahiti and Kauaʻi.

Kauaʻi, the Garden Isle

Kauaʻi is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands, about five million years old, and its nickname comes from the greenery that follows a great deal of rain: the summit of Waiʻaleʻale averages around 460 inches a year. Kilohana Plantation is in Līhuʻe, the island's county seat.

From sugar to orchard

Sugar plantations were founded on Kauaʻi from 1835 and dominated the island's economy until the middle of the twentieth century; the last one closed in 2008. Kilohana Plantation today is a 60-acre orchard and agricultural park, and the luau is staged in its grounds.

What a luau is

A lūʻau is a Hawaiian feast with entertainment. The word comes from a stew of young taro leaves, and the centrepiece of the table is kālua pork, a whole pig slow-cooked in an imu, the underground oven. At Kilohana the guests watch the pig come out of the oven before dinner.

What is served, and with which ticket

The two buffet listings share one menu and an open bar. The VIP listing swaps both for a plated dinner at a restaurant on the plantation.

Buffet seating: the mains
Kālua pork baked in the imu, poi, fresh salads and seasonal fish, with teriyaki chicken, noodles and fresh fruit alongside. The menu moves with the season.
Buffet seating: dessert
Pineapple upside-down cake, haupia (coconut pudding) and a banana crème tart close the buffet.
Buffet seating: the bar
The open bar is part of the buffet tickets, poured from the moment you arrive. Tips are not included.
Dietary needs
The menu includes gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options, and the offering changes with the seasons.
VIP dinner: four courses
At Gaylord's Restaurant you choose each course: shrimp phyllo or a roasted vegetable tartine, then an island caprese or a Caesar salad, then fresh catch with kālua pork or short ribs with kālua pork.
VIP dinner: dessert and drinks
Taro and Hawaiian sweet bread pudding, profiteroles with vanilla bean ice cream or a seasonal fruit bowl; a champagne toast and one complimentary drink come with the dinner.
